www.duskyward.comBefore we start Guillermo from Silentfusion said "hey sexy..." lol:He is too nice, tell him what's up? :)
Tell us a little about your background?I'm a Virgo and I love avocados.
Where are you from?I'm from Houston, but I've lived in LA for the last 13 years. Hell..... for way too long.
Design education:Not much. I learned from other designers I've worked with over the years. I also took a few computer classes in college using PhotoShop 2.0, as I recall. One class dealt mainly with tiling in PhotoShop.
How did you start out as an artist and designer?I wanted to go to art high school for dance but I didn't make it into the program, so I applied to the visual arts program instead. After getting accepted, I found that I really enjoyed drawing and painting.
What do you do besides Art?I'm close with my family and friends, so on the weekends I hangout a lot. I read comics and horror books. I am also a major connoisseur of horror movies.
I've noticed you took Asian Studies and I see the influence in your work. Is Asian Art a main source of inspiration?Definitely. I've always enjoyed viewing Japanese prints and woodblock. I find myself constantly looking at my art history books for inspiration.
How has flash benefited you and your work?I love motion and flash, but at times it is difficult to use some of the tools.
I've worked with artist that uses the technique of projecting work on canvas then tracing it. Although, I've seen some wonderful pieces created this way, would you consider this cheating of some sort?
No, of course not, I'm not sure it's as simple as tracing an image. I don't think you should always look at the technical aspects of a piece of work. It's more important to think about the choices people make in deciding to create something.
For all our young female viewers, how was it working with the BackStreet Boys?Very funny. Those guys were really nice, and they wanted a different look to their album, so they were open to new ideas. Overall it was a great experience; I decided to push myself to do what I like, not what other people think is cool; so it was great that the BackStreet Boys were down for the ride. Plus, I got tickets to see them in concert, and they were awesome.
At what point did you realize that you could actually make a living out of doing what you do?I don't think it's totally concrete yet, sometimes I still question if I can make a living from this; but so far it's going well.
What are your thoughts on Design Community sites such as DIK, Scene 360 and now Pacdesco?I enjoy visiting those sites. I always like seeing what people are producing. One reason design communities are so incredible to me is that they are made up of people from all over.
Will we be seeing some Photography in your portfolio anytime soon?I take photos, but they are mainly for documentation and graphic references. So, you probably won't see photographs on the site anytime soon, plus I'm not that good.
What was the most difficult project you ever encountered?Because you have to pay the bills, you don't always get projects you want to work on; those projects are usually the hardest to deal with.
Is there a meaning or story behind the name "Duskyward" and if so can you share it with us?It's really just a combination of two words I like. I know that's boring, but it's the truth.
What would you like to add to your workstation to improve productivity?A mini me, who I don't have to pay.
PDC: I think we all could use one of those..mines may get on my nerves though..lol! What is your all-time favorite movie and why?Aliens, it has a female kicking alien ass. Ripley rocks!!!
Is there any new projects coming up that you would like to share with us?I haven't painted recently, so I'm excited to start a new series.
Thanks Tracy for doing this interview, we are very impressed with your work. Are there any last comments you would like to add?I really appreciate you taking the time to interview me; I hope I answered your questions properly. Peace out.
