Eric So
www.ericsoart.com

ES: I born, studied & work in HK 36 years. I worked for the 4A'sadvertising agents, and then be a freelance illustrator. On 1996, quiet all the job related to advertising, and held my first painting exhibition. And start to my new life for creates.

Where are you from?
I'm come from Hong Kong.

So what initially inspired you to create these awesome little figures?
I start to made figures on 1998. Because I'm same of the now collectors at that moment. And at that time, I think some figures can be made much more better. So I start to re - paint & touch up them. And finally, I started making the figures from the zero!

At what point did you realize that you could actually make a living out of doing what you do?
Because when I start to made a figures before. I never think about the market. I just look for myself "What I want to do it?"

Can you share with our viewers the process in creating these toys:
I think everybody can be a designer. Just up to they interested or not. So, that's the main point!

What do you do besides designing toys:
Yes, I love to do everything besides toy. Because every time I told everybody I'm not a toy designer. Just everybody concentrate on my toys. So, they think Eric is a toy designer.

I've noticed Tower Records (Japan) carries your merchandise, can you share with our viewers where else can they buy one of your amazing figures:
It was because we were line up by my Japanese agent (Sony).

You can find some of Eric' merchandise on his website ericsoart.com

What's behind the concept of createyourestate.com?
Actually, It's nothing-special idea for createyourestate.com. Just because Estate series came out on 2001. My aims is produced the toys for the kids. Hope it can inspire the kids to create something. So, in future! We will try to get more close with the children & let the price lower! Or maybe it will be an online shop in future???

Are you affiliated with www.dhky.com in anyway or did they just design your site for you?
He is my friend during I held a Bruce Lee exhibition on 1999 in NYC. And then I ask him to designed my www.ericsoart.com & www.createyourestate.com website.

What is the average time it takes you to create one of your figures?
Average 15 - 30 minutes.

The one thing that separates your toys from others is the minute detailing of their apparel. Do you also sew and stitch everything yourself?
No, I don't know any sew & stitch. I need to ask my supplier to help this part!

Do you require another designer to assist you?
No! I think no body interested on it! Haha......!!!

Bruce Lee has been a great inspiration for me ever since I've read his book the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, are you a Martial Artist or do you just admire his philosophy?
Really, you love Bruce Lee too? Anyway, I'm not a Martial artist. I love his philosophy & spirit.

What materials do you use to create your toys?
I used clay for the master sculpture.

Do you have any new projects you can tell us about?
I will release the "Hellboy" figure, "Vanimal Zoo" series recently, and will hold a painting exhibition this year!

PDC: Wow, Hellboy, I just saw the previews of that movie the other week! Can't wait to see your version of the toys!

Every year Hawaii holds an annual toy convention, would you ever think of coming here to sell some of your merchandise?
Yes, I want to do something every time. But I haven't enough a time to do everything by myself in this moment. So, maybe later!

Michael Lau also has some great looking toys, what are your thoughts on his work?
Very good!!!

Thank you so much for doing this interview, any last comments you would like to share?
Aggressive, Hard Working & Open Mind! Peace Eric So

“A little while after the release of the first tokyoplastic; it was getting 40,000 hits a day, which was very surprising and cool and made us happy and we received a lot of enquiries from potential clients. Prior commitments meant that it took a whole year just to get to the position where we were able to start accepting the offers.”

“Style is a good thing - but if anything I would like to be as diverse as possible - stylistically. To corner oneself into a certain style only means that one is limited. It's the age-old debate over specialization versus generalization. I find that as a designer - if a client were to present a problem to me, I need to be fully capable of solving that problem in any way possible..”

“I've just been drawing like mad since I was two feet tall, and haven't stopped. When I was younger I was really into cartoons (I'm sure most kids were), and I used to sit in front of the TV for hours drawing what I saw. Then I started making my own characters and drew them in scenarios with the characters I saw in TV. Then I discovered comics and it was all over, ALL of my money went towards those for
the next 8 years....”
