FM: My name is Firman machda.20 years old working as a web designer in ATL binus (www.binus.ac.id) and also studying computer science there.

Where you are from?
I come from Indonesia. and living in Jakarta but sometimes during weekend visiting my hometown Bandung.

Design education:
No? Formal design background I think. I'm a self-taught person but I have studied graphic design in my high school year when they provided graphic design studies.

How did you start out as an artist and designer?
Somewhere in 1998 when my friend introduce me to Photoshop and flash and realized this tools are so cool and then I taught myself how to create artworks using this kind of tool.

Did you go from creating art and then move into graphic design? Or was it the other way around?
I like drawing a lot since I was a child and then become interested in digital art especially web and motion design. And then studying computer programming to make art by code. I am so amaze when I see what can code do and the relation with art and design right now still studying to explore that possibility.

Do you think that traditional art styles transfer across well to graphic design?
Yupp, I think so but depend on the purpose of the design it self.

You have a very unique style, how did you come up with it?
No idea it just comes up that way. But I like to explore more styles and more tools to make a different kind of design.

What inspires you?
Music, video game, painting...everything.

What do you see in the future of graphic / web design?
I think graphic or web design will be more advance more styles. Especially if the net infrastructure better then now. And there will be no limits for designing web also we can experiment with all different kind of media.

If graphic design did not exist what profession would you practicing?
Hmmm??.Maybe become a programmer or businessman, but prefer working in advertising.

What do you like/hate about the net?
For me the net is like one gigantic library. I can read and find what I want to know expand my knowledge. But I hate spam and virus that all over the internet >:( .

Do you think that Flash is cool or overused?
I think is cool it's totally amazing what flash do. I like amit, yugo and James Peterson works a lot.

Do you prefer technologically advanced sites or sites with simple but good design?
Prefer simple but good design but actually depend on the purpose the site it self. If the technology will support the sites for better experience and more information to their visitor sure I'll enjoy it too.

Do you have any cool design tips?
Keep practicing I think ??

What are your bad personal and design habits?
I think I'm a little bit emotional and impatient person and somehow it will also affect my design..too?

Design styles you dislike:
Nope. I like all kind of design styles.

What program that you currently use would you like to see changed and why?
Photoshop ??. ??.. And I want to see it change better than now (Photoshop CS). And can accommodate every designer need ?.. and expectation.

Do you have any new projects coming up that you can tell us about?
Hmm?? I don't have any project right now just doing my personal project and project from my office. Like www.binus-school-jkt.sch.id

Is most of your graphical material pre-supplied, or do you have to source it yourself?
Mostly I have to source it myself but sometimes my office gives me pre-supplied material for some project.

Final comments:
Thanks for this opportunity

“A little while after the release of the first tokyoplastic; it was getting 40,000 hits a day, which was very surprising and cool and made us happy and we received a lot of enquiries from potential clients. Prior commitments meant that it took a whole year just to get to the position where we were able to start accepting the offers.”

“Style is a good thing - but if anything I would like to be as diverse as possible - stylistically. To corner oneself into a certain style only means that one is limited. It's the age-old debate over specialization versus generalization. I find that as a designer - if a client were to present a problem to me, I need to be fully capable of solving that problem in any way possible..”

“I've just been drawing like mad since I was two feet tall, and haven't stopped. When I was younger I was really into cartoons (I'm sure most kids were), and I used to sit in front of the TV for hours drawing what I saw. Then I started making my own characters and drew them in scenarios with the characters I saw in TV. Then I discovered comics and it was all over, ALL of my money went towards those for
the next 8 years....”
